Assessment, ESOL Testing, and Evaluation

Teacher Vignettes

Ms. Whitecage, Ms. Jones, and Mr. Blake are eager to implement assessment strategies and practices in their classrooms. They anticipate learning more about assessment strategies and protocol in the upcoming district workshops. Research shows that in learning academic content, ELs must first be able to interpret the sociocultural context of the school. Every teacher must effectively integrate assessment of academic content with the development of English language proficiency in a meaningful and contextual way. An overview of testing issues is presented to support the teaching and evaluation of ELs and to differentiate between ELs’ proficiency in English and their knowledge in each content area. The following Power Point presentations, documents, videos, and links provide information regarding testing and evaluation of ELs and large-scale and classroom based considerations in assessing ELs.
